April Newsletter

April is National Heartworm Awareness Month!

Use this month’s newsletter to help you increase your awareness and dispel a few myths about heartworms:

1) Heartworm disease is spread by mosquitoes.

2) Even indoor dogs can get heartworm disease!

3) Dogs with thick haircoats are still at risk.

4) Heartworm preventatives should be given once a month, same day every month, year round.

5) Heartworm preventatives kill intestinal parasites, too. This includes roundworms, hookworms, whipworms and some even kill tapeworms.

6) Some heartworm preventatives include a flea preventative as well.

7) We recommend a yearly heartworm blood test, even if your pet is on year round preventative.

8) A heartworm blood test is testing for the adult female heartworm antigen. It takes 6 months from exposure by an infected mosquito for an adult heartworm to develop. Therefore, it takes 6 months after exposure for a heartworm test to be positive.

9) Heartworm preventatives are easier to give, less expensive and a LOT safer than heartworm treatment. This is truly a disease where an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
