Adopt-A-Cat Month!

June is one of our favorite months here at Stolley Park Veterinary Hospital. There are many reasons for this (nice weather, summer vacation, fireflies), and a very special reason is that it is Adopt-a-Cat month! We love our feline patients and are always excited to see new cat family members.
When you adopt a new feline friend, there are a few factors to consider concerning cat health.
First, the “combo test.” Whether a cat’s history is known or unknown, it is important to do a simple blood test to make sure they don’t have Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) or Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV). Both of these viruses are incurable, have the potential to make a cat very sick, and are communicable to other cats, so it is important to make sure your new cat is free from these insidious viruses.
A second consideration with new cats or kittens is the potential illnesses they may present within the first few weeks you have them in your home. Some common cat diseases that we see in our newly adopted kitties include upper respiratory infections (runny eyes, sneezing, runny nose), ringworm (bald patches and itching) or diarrhea. Let your veterinarian know if you have seen any of these signs or suspect these problems so treatment can be started as soon as possible.

Finally, preventative care in our kitties is a very important and sometimes neglected area of feline medicine. Preventative care includes vaccinations, regular examinations and parasite control. We vaccinate for Rabies, Feline Leukemia and Feline Distemper. Parasite control can include a monthly skin application of Revolution (which kills fleas, ear mites, heartworm and some intestinal parasites) or Profender (which kills most feline intestinal parasites including tapeworms). We also have oral dewormers available.

If you have a new cat or kitten, congratulations! We would love to see them and help you have a healthy and happy new family member. Happy Adopt a Cat month! And have a wonderful summer.
